BIAC-VIAC Deal on ADR Dhaka, Hanoi eye increased trade

Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) signed Cooperation Agreement with Vietnam International Arbitration Centre (VIAC) on resolution of commercial dispute through Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR).
Muhammad A. Rumee Ali, Chief Executive Officer of the BIAC signed the agreement with Vu Anh Duong, Secretary General of the VIAC in Hanoi, Vietnam recently.
This Cooperation Agreement is intended to explore areas for co-operation in respect of the use of facilities and services of both the centres on alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
Duong expressed his gratitude for taking such initiatives of signing the agreement and helping both the countries to work together for resolving commercial disputes between the business of both the countries.

Mr. Aftab-ul-Islam, Managing Director & CEO of IOE, Bangladesh Ltd. He has an excellent business background and highly reputation for his relentless endeavor and dynamism. He is a very well known business personality in the business arena and at the same time he has been playing a significant role for the economic development of the country.

Born on July 01, 1950, Mr. Aftab-ul-Islam who hails from Comilla completed his graduation in Commerce and Law under the University of Dhaka. He is also a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB). His wife Mrs. Towfika Aftab, BA (Hon’s), MA LLB is an Advocate of the Bangladesh Supreme Court.

Mr.Aftab-ul-Islam is also currently carrying out his responsibility as the President of American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh, AmCham. He has been recently nominated by the Government of Bangladesh as Chairperson of SME Foundation (Small and Medium Enterprise Foundation). The SME Foundation was established by the government of Bangladesh under Company Act 1994 with a view to work for SME development of the country.

Apart from this, Mr. Aftab-ul-Islam is a Director of Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), Board Member, Chittagong Stock Exchange Ltd. (CSE), Executive Board Member International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) of Bangladesh, Country Director, South Asian Regional Energy Coalition (SAREC) and a Member of Board of Governor, Institute of Business Administration (IBA) of Dhaka University. Previously Mr. Aftab-ul-Islam held high position of different business Association as President, Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS), and the leading Computer Association of Bangladesh, President, The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI-2000). He also held the position as the President of American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) for two terms (2001-2003 & 2003-2005). He was a Director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) for the term 2005-2007.

As part his civil and social activities Mr. Aftab-ul-Islam is contributing his best to the well being of the society. He was the President of Ratary Club of Dhaka, North, Vice-President, Fair Election Monitoring Alliance (FEMA), and Founder Vice-President, International Institution of Business Analysis (IIBA) – Bangladesh Chapter. He is also a life time member of transparency International, Bangladesh Economic Samity, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Assistance for Blind Children, Anjuman Mofijul Islam, Dhaka Club, Gulshan Club, Kurmitola Golf Club, Comilla Town Club and Comilla Station Club.

An experienced business personality Mr. Aftab-ul-Islam attended various professional and management training courses and workshops in U.S.A, UK, Brazil, Australia, Japan, Cyprus, Bahrain, Egypt, South Korea, Pakistan and India. He is widely recognized at home and abroad for persuading the government of Bangladesh in to using the information technology (IT) for efficiency and competitiveness together with making the duty free import of computer items and also instrumental for setting up the BCS Computer City at IDB Bhaban, Dhaka, a unique and prominent hardware market of the country. Mr. Aftab-ul-Islam Proactively Promoted the country image of Bangladesh through participating different international seminars and forums as part of the delegation of government as the president of AmCham, DCCI & FBCCI and also helped in luring several foreign direct investment (FDI) in Bangladesh.

Apart from Managing Director & CEO of IOE, Bangladesh Mr. Aftab-ul-Islam is also associated with other business Organizations. He is the Acting Chairman of Asia Pacific General Insurance Co. Ltd. Chairman, IIT Bangladesh Ltd. (an institution that grooms IT Professional) Director, ATAZ Bangladesh Ltd. (a joint venture consultancy) firm with USA), Chairman, Impact PR (the first International Public Relation agency in Bangladesh and Chairman, Home Delivery Services Ltd. (On-Line Shopping mall and home delivery services company).

Mr. Aftab-ul-Islam received many awards for his outstanding contribution to ICT and other sectors. He was awarded Maulana Akram Khan Memorial Gold Award in 1999 for his contribution in the field of IT. Rapport Management Award in 2000 as Business leader of the year, Rotary club Cosmopolitan recognized the contribution in HRD in the field of IT in 2001 and Lifetime Achievement by BCS City.

Aftab ul Islam joins central bank as director

Aftab ul Islam has recently been appointed as the director of Bangladesh Bank.

Islam started his 36-year-long career in the private sector with USA-based multinational IT company NCR Corporation and later headed the company. In 1992, he launched his own business, IOE (Bangladesh) Ltd.

A commerce graduate, Islam completed his LLB and later went on to become a chartered accountant and a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh.

He is also a former president of Bangladesh Computer Samity and Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
